that said, I don't think this is "online nihilism" because the well from which these shooters are drawing -- all the way down, past Breivik, past Columbine -- is still white supremacy

This is why I always find it questionable to characterize it as nihilism. Nihilism could, hypothetically, express itself in all manner of ways. But this specific thing ALWAYS includes naziism and white supremacy. That's not just a conicidence.

BTW, and I know this is probably a risky opinion to have on Bsky, but after reading Breivik's history, I think that in his particular case it was white supremacy and a soul broken by horrible parental abuse. Maybe even the latter was the driving factor behind adopting the former.

(I know, there are others who were similarly abused and didn't become mass murderers. Maybe they had more empathy. Or more fear of punishment. Who knows.)
