I am increasingly struck by the parallels between the introduction of the printing press and social media, in which people from very narrow fields with very specific communicative cultures (clerics, printers, administrators then, scientists and engineers now) imagined they could scale globally
I also want to note that people who live in cities are constantly referred to a scum and cockroaches and 'not real Americans' as if cities aren't 'real america.' Seems like a bit of a disconnect, there.
