This is genuinely upsetting to me, because I have very literally in the last year started the most micro of micro-businesses and quite a lot of my work so far has gone to the US, and I have no idea if I’m going to be able to send hand-printed calendars across the Atlantic now.

And I’m literally in the middle of deciding whether to print 50 calendars on about 500 pieces of card at four impressions per sheet which is an immense amount of work that will become completely worthless sometime in December.

The $100 is gifts, there’s no minimum for goods.

Sorry to be the voice of reason Kate, but I would honestly try to expand your UK and other non-US markets. An Irish friend of mine has recently had to make decision to stop shipping books to US (she’s a publisher). Good luck with your business whatever you decide. 💜

I’ve been selling my work to whoever wants it and so far that’s UK:US ~ 70:30. But losing that 30% would be really painful? It’s English language print work so the wider market is limited. And the US market is enormous.

But the UK market is also enormous. Unless your business is extremely niche. Just thinking that finding ways of replacing the 30% you currently get from US might be wise. Or you could simply raise your prices further products you shop to US to cover cost of tariffs… and just see how it goes.

My business is, for now, extremely niche, yes.

I *think* it is only while they clarify what the new duty-free rules are.

As one of your customers in the U.S., I find it equally disturbing. I like being able to buy stuff from friends in other countries.

All I can think is that if I set up a ‘pay for a year in advance £5/mo supporter level which will get you a calendar and a couple of postcards too’ and then I can send calendars as ‘gifts’ and use the de-minimis.
