I dunno, whenever a ghost is confirmed to be spores in the basement or ant-infested grasshoppers in the stew, the story starts to click less for me.

I've experienced something similar to this too! And yes, it makes it less fun. Mine haven't been haunted houses per se, but "highly rated horror book that reveals the antagonist is a parasite" has been a common theme lately.
