It's pretty funny that we're near 50 years on, Fords and Chevies are still crap. But even they run for 20+ years now, and our retvrn bros are pining for the Reagan years when everything was supposedly great.

Fords and Chevies??? They were the world's greatest cars for decades though. Truly. No Benz could last longer than a Chevy --at least in the past.

Maybe, but in '81 Haggard sings "I wish Fords and Chevies still lasted 10 years" like we'd lost some piece of American greatness. I gather this implies imports had begun to eclipse domestic cars, at least in public perception. Not the main point though

A great point though.. sometimes there is a projection based on a real thing. Refrigerators, stoves, cars, etc. in the 50s and 60s lasted forever and to make money they planned obsolescence. I laughed realizing that my first HP laser jet could not be killed....they had to stop updating the drivers

Today, there's a whole political movement built around that same "stolen future" narrative. But the idea you could have an adult car company in 2025 whose sedans crap out at 10 yrs is unthinkable. Fords and Chevies are much better than in the now idealized past, when ppl were still complaining

Sometimes source of discontent IS capitalism...like the ups and downs of capitalism cause much discontent in popular thinking and music. When we're up they sing about inequality, when we're down they sing about decline and poverty. But now the singers are RICH so they are rightwing and talk BS.

They are still around in Cuba...they will actually run forever. A Chevy from the 50s or 60s if well maintained will still be running. They do not crap out in 10 years.
