I agree but I feel like you can't promote their work even in that context. If you sail for it, but tell others you like the work, they might end up buying it. And then you've contributed to the artist, albeit indirectly.

We can't control the behavior of others, nor the choices they make - only our own. The only thing we can do is tell them exactly who the artist is, including the "bad" stuff, and encourage others to make informed decisions about the art they consume. Isn't that more important, after all?
But you can control your actions. If you don't talk about the content you sail for, then others don't learn about it from you. That's all I am saying, obtain the content but don't state to others anything positive about the content even with the caveat of the terrible artist.
No, you're wrong, and clearly you don't have anything more to say.
I'm sorry what? How am I wrong? Example: If I like Harry Potter and sail for all its media, then tell people how much I like it, even if I warn them of the bad of JK, but then they buy some of the HP stuff because of it, I contributed. If I don't tell people about liking it, they might not buy it.
