also, as far as I know it didn't get changed for "woke" reasons or whatever; it was just a logo change like corporations do all the time

Its the same as right/far-right claiming that American Eagle proved the left hates beautiful white women. Desperate attempts to spin culture war in their favor.
As Steve Bannon put it - just flood the zone
The only reason they changed it is that their primary customer base was literally dying because the average age is 65. They hop taking Uncle Herschel off the sign will signal younger would-be customers that they can come too and don't need to bring grandpa. I suspect the manu is less deep fried too.
Logo simplification is a trend in large part because of mobile(See the Starbucks' mermaid) and for a highway rest stop it makes even more sense. I don't know what people are arguing about.
Not that I actually care about the logo change, but as an observer the change they made last year (removing the old man and the barrel, keeping the odd shape) should have been sufficient to keep a unique mark to make it easily recognisable from a distance on a rest stop/exit sign.
But I get what you mean, the regular shape will render more quickly and efficiently on a web page or phone. It's a shame that microseconds on a computer have become the guidance for a logo. Hand drawn art is of the past.
Generally, rest stops and gas stations have very simple logos and names to make them easily recognizable and remarkable, far simpler than "Cracker Barrel". I would have redesigned both the logo and the stores(And added gas stations), but, I'm not their CEO.
They are not convenience stores or fast food joints. They are also not rest stops. Never designed as such.
I think that's *precisely* the problem for Cracker Barrel.
It's really impossible to figure out what their particular bitchfit is about in this case. It just feels like they have a perpetual canker sore in their asses and anything is gonna set them off.
Logo change and a whole change up inside the stores. I mean, they were already cookie cutter restaurants, now they're...worse.
Basically - less clutter in the logo and also on the walls. Same theme, same stores selling overpriced kitsch and toys you can find anywhere plus some old school candy.
