He was so wedded to this "X == 10" notion that he convinced my mom I **had to be selling drugs** to acquire the cards I had Because "there's no way he could have cards that powerful otherwise" What was "that powerful"? Fireball, Disintegrate, and Stream of Life 2/2 @moink.org

I never thought of it that way, but that's kinda brilliant. "The treasure could be anywhere on this map, but there's one spot that solves the problem. That X you see is the solution. You could spend all your time digging randomly, but if you work out where the X is, you save yourself the trouble."

Really trying to picture the guy who intuitively grasps Roman numerals but is mystified by algebra

Any numerate guy after the 9th century BC (Roman numerals invented) and before the 9th century AD (algebra invented), probably! What we're clearly looking at here is a time traveler.

Tried MtG for two years during the Ravnica era. Discovered I don't have the financial wherewithal to keep up with the competitive folks. Best Friday Night Magic I had was 4-1 and a 3rd place tie with a Rakdos deck. Then the blue/black players figured it out and stomped me thereafter.

The best part is that it makes all those cards *way worse* if X has to be ten!

Also, isn't "Fireball" XXR? That must've been doubly confusing.

I taught my dad at the same time (only fair 'cos he taught me D&D) Around that same time. Even *he* knew what 'X' was in algebra.

That’s… bizarre. I mean, some people used to use “N” as a variable, but I get the feeling that your cousin didn’t know what a variable was, full stop.

I’m guessing he learned Roman numerals so he knew that V means 5, X means 10, end of story.

X was the first thing I ever saw as a variable. I always thought of N as more of a placeholder constant, kinda like c

N is what you use in a power or series, I feel. Nth power. Sigma n (no idea how to make the symbol on here). So something to enter…

I dread to think what he would've made of this monstrosity from the Star Wars CCG

The card Braniac from the A New Hope expansion of Decipher's Star Wars CCG. Image is a grumpy looking copper skinned guy with a large brain shaped head. This is a card too annoying to everyone involved to ever see play. Destiny value is π. Cost and forfeit value are Y and X, respectively. Power is √(3(X-Y) + 2(A-B) + π), minimum 1. Ability is 3. X= dark side hand cards Y= light side hand cards A= total number of dark side force icons B= total number of light side force icons π is listed in the card text to about 30 decimal places
