Also... it's the Senate The idea you need a bunch of prior experience to be competent at the job is laughably incoherent

is it though just because you can be a senator without knowing what youre doing doesnt mean youll be a competent one
I mean Tuberville is a Senator for fucks sake, and he wasn't even good at his original profession.
lets not make tuberville a role model for democrats
Just pointing out that the bar is already laying on the floor.
we dont have to meet it there
Whatever, you dibt get what I'm saying so fuck off. I dont have time for your bullshit.
is it bullshit to set my bar above the fuckin floor
Prior experience helps with running a campaign, sure But if you win, there are many training resources built in to the job (orientation, Congressional Research Service, a budget to hire staffers, etc)
It's been a while since I read it (for obvious reasons), but I remember thinking Al Franken's memoir was a pretty interesting glimpse into the process of learning how to be a senator.
Maybe he's Fetterman II. Totally fair thing to worry about. I just think the "but he has no experience!" argument is silly, and easily countered by pointing to Fetterman, Manchin, and other well-experienced Ds bsky.app/profile/conn...
Reminds me of that guy who thought people would elect him POTUS when he didn't even serve a full term in the Senate!
Even with Fetterman I'd say it was arguably a major health event that was significantly at fault, not inexperience. Can't have predicted that, wasn't on anyone's radar. Anyone hyping him up for POTUS was over their skis, but he was tracking to be a fine Senator IMO.
More political experience is just a nice way of saying 'I keep the quiet parts, quiet'. In all areas benefiting from such discretion.
The job experience I want in a Senator is hiring and management skill, the ability to hire good underlings who know their subfields and LISTEN to what the underlings say.
The thing about Fetterman is that there were a lot of red flags even before his medical/mental health challenges, but they got dismissed in favor of the vibes. Platner is definitely a vibes risk and ought to be vetted, but a lot of what he says is pretty standard angry millennial left-liberal.
platners entire wardrobe is red flags
(Also to be clear, I don't blame Fetterman turning out the way he did on his stroke/depression. I think he was always an asshole, changes to his brain made him a less inhibited asshole, and now he seemingly refuses to take care of his brain, like an asshole)
to say nothing of the other side, such as noted political luminary Tommy Tuberville
As far as I can tell the alternative is a former Katie porter staffer who has ~$1M in the campaign bank. IMO, seems like the better option but Maine can figure it out
The former Katie Porter staffer married to one of the scammers running Mothership and stealing money from small donors with spam texts, or a different one?
Between the two of them I am receiving unwanted spam texts from just one and it isn’t that guy
also like if Graham has the charisma, (which he seems to) to win more easily, that is worth seeing play out in a primary
I mean yeah we should have the primary election but also I don’t really trust that guy and his words aren’t helping.
The concern is not generally that they will be incapable of walking to the floor and voting with leadership on the important stuff, which is mostly what the very best junior senator is good for. The concern is that they won’t. I’ve had enough “I’m not like other democrats”
Fetterman and Synema leaving a lot of bad tastes in people's mouths
Can you bloviate, and do fuckall? Are you 132? Then apparently, you're eminently qualified.
Sounds more like a bad faith justification for the "it's my turn now" mentality that plagues the Democratic establishment.
