I’m close. My dad found a way to anchor car seats in the bed of his Chevy Silverado (w camper shell) and we’d sit back there for rides halfway across the country.

My grandparents had a truck with a toolbox across the back. My sis & I rode 8 hrs to their house in the open bed of the truck, ducking our heads under the toolbox when we needed a break from the incessant wind. Waved to all the truckers and got a lot of them to blow their horns, too. Good times!
I blew my kid’s mind by mentioning the car that had bench seats in the front and if you were in the middle there you had to work the fussy radio.
I miss bench seats so much 😭
I’m pretty sure it was 1976 before we had a car without a bench seat (a Pinto). Even the 1978 LTD we had had like a 40/60 thing that was basically a bench seat.
