But we also can’t ignore that, based on who holds power in these states, a large number of people openly support authoritarianism and white supremacy.
Engaging with that group isn’t useful—they’re cultishly committed to their worldview. They ruined Twitter (with Elon’s help), and I’d hate to see Bluesky overrun in the same way. The reality is, hate tends to flow more visibly from red states than blue states.
That doesn’t mean everyone there is an extremist—but it does mean we should be mindful about how much space we give hate-filled voices.
Bluesky won't be affected to the same extent by white supremacy. Blocklists and other moderation tools mean we rarely see that kind content and people are either bullied off the app or have so little reach because of blocklists that their voices are muffled, unlike X where they're magnified.
