It’s such a harmful Christian theology that looks at wars and famine and says, “this might be the fulfillment of End Times prophecies!” and “Jesus might be retuning soon!” instead of “look at how much people are suffering!” and “how can we stop this injustice?”
I’ve heard this kind of talk my entire life. It’s just an excuse to continue to do nothing and kick the can down the road. Not to mention, there have been Christians of every generation since Christ that thought Jesus would return in their lifetimes.
The world could be a different place if Christians would practice their beliefs in the here and now vs. waiting for something that may happen one day.

It is incredible that amidst all of the positive teachings of Christ in the Gospels, the redemptive love demonstrated in His death on a cross, his exhortation to “Love your neighbor as I have loved you”, all these people can get out of it is some vague end times prediction. Jesus would weep.

I was pretty indifferent to Christians until I moved to the buckle of the Bible belt and now I can't stand them. They use Jesus to justify the most heinous shit. They're a bunch of homophobes, racists and misogynists and they always try to shove their religion down other people's throats.

Perhaps, Paul's epistles to the Thessalonians were written as resignation letters. Maybe, what he was trying to say is he finally grasped the meaning of Christ, the truth of it all, that we are alone, that there is nothing beyond consciousness, no transcendent deity, only the vacuum and its horrors.
Perhaps, in the end, what Paul realized, what Christ meant to reveal, is that all we have are the grounds we make and bridges we build, that what we call God is simply consciousness, Being, and we perceive it as a being separate from ourselves only because we are aliens to ourselves and one another.

Yeah, I grew up Mormon/LDS and such ideas were drilled into us from adolescence. I didn't consider it was such a lesser known branch of Christianity, thanks for filling others in on the details.
I grew up Catholic and we didn't have this drilled into us since we don't do rapture theology, it blew my when I first heard about it in college from some guy who was passing out Jack Chick comics.

I don’t think “harmful” goes nearly far enough. Christ didn’t make “End Times prophecies”. Those were made in the Old Testament - which says or has very little about Christ or his teachings. The OT envisioned a “Warrior King” God - the anthesis of what Christ taught.
We need to do what we can, but ultimately, only God has the answers to mankind's suffering and the sooner Jesus returns, the sooner the healing can start.
