Unfortunately, the Kyivrus only lasted from 880 ce to about 1250 ce. What happened? Fragmentation like the Muscovy area broke off due to succession disputes. During these disputes is when the Mongols came. While most of the Kyivrus fought back, Muscovy bent over to the Mongols.

If the Hetman did something the rest of the Kozaks didn't like, he could be removed and killed. The Kozaks were hired by the kingdoms that surrounded the Kozaks (Poland, Lithuania, Sweden, Muscovy) against the others that surrounded the Kozaks.

Through the 1600's to 1st independence in 1918, then 2nd independence in 1991, Ukraine and Ukrainians had to go in survival mode, as Moscow tried to destroy Ukraine, the Ukrainian Language, Culture, Traditions and History. Moscow tried to claim them all as their own. Even to this day.
