Good question, I hope a canid behaviorist weighs in. Might be to cool off, IDK. It could also be a scent thing, some do love to wear a strong "fragrance." Maybe doggo is donning an insect barrier? Or maybe their skin is a little itchy, & the mud mask calms histamines / restores pH balance?

That's my dog, at every mudhole we come across hiking. Just throw a stick of a ball into the nearest creek / lake / etc., and swim that mud off of them! This gives them the chance to immediately start fresh in a new mud hole.

My late Émile Zola was a mud bath aficionado. One day at the dog park, following a hip procedure, he found the perfect one. Clean-up time: Almost 2.5 hours. Grit lodged itself everywhere in that thick double coat. Zola was never prouder of himself. (I miss you, baby boy.)

When my son was 3, he found some mud and was covered from head to toe before I could reach him. He was overjoyed. To go home, I found a bin liner, stuck him in it, head sticking out, put him in the car seat and deposited him straight in the bath! He loved it.

Several of kids of different races, and within minutes, they were all EXACTLY the same colour. They had a blast, and we thought it was hilarious. The mud was kind of disgusting because we were celebrating laying the first brick of a hanger and had thrown our drinks in it. Coke, beer, whisky, juice.
