How is a dog trained to love something?
They use that item in their reward games they play with them when they make a find. It's no different than the way dogs come to love balls or frisbees, when the dog sees the dummy he knows he's gong to get to play with his handler for a while.

Modern dogs have been bred to be service animals of various kinds. They are happiest at work. It breaks my heart to see good dogs abandoned at pounds because the owners are away too much at work, leaving the animals idle and anxious, which leads to behavioural issues. Working dogs NEED to work.
