Not to be pissed off but seeing a 5e kickstarter get over 200 backers while also blatantly saying well we use midjourney images because we're so small and can't afford art :( As if there isn't tons of stock art out there to use for it.

Maybe they can use the AI to generate some interest in their garbage game supplements because it sure as hell won't come from me.
When I see "AI", I want to ask, "What else is generated then? Will the campaign be peppered with it? Will it be the whole campaign so they can still be 'UwU small beans jus a small guy' and not have anyone dedicated?"
We did it with all human art (and all of it is amazing!!!) We have a mix of professionals and hobbyists. www.kickstarter.com/projects/ska...
Pisses me right off tbh
IKR? Wonder if they're on Bsky, but "it's a 5e kickstarter" ahhh... doesn't narrow the field...
They don't appear to be, I already checked.
So... won't be Mastodon... One of the pro fash sites then. Meta with the genocide, or X. And then there's the state owned clock boys. *shrugs* Denouncing them would just give them free publicity. Keep up the "they smeared shit on their faces" attitudes I guess? 😒
I didn't want to specifically call them out but I did check their social media pages and between all their accounts they don't seem to have a big following, which makes me scratch my head on how they got so many backers for their project. The Kickstarter was for a wild magic sorcerer subclass
They're not on bluesky or else I would have pointed the finger and mentioned not to buy from them haha ..
Like the point of kickstarter is to get the money to do things like hire artists. If they can’t be bothered to hire an artist for art the rest is likely ran through AI too. Just lazy people making lazy content. Not that D&D should be worth anyone’s time anyways with Habro’s pro-AI stance.
Did they also just have a strangely low goal?
Yeah it was like $500 or something
The TTRPG scene over on Kickstarter is just full of scams and grifters. It started with the fake dice Kickstarters and now this is commonplace for some reason. It's so discouraging 3
Uhhhh the kickstarter is for... paying the artists? You get one on board and pay them for some demos then release the full art after you raise enough to fund it. Going "give us money for unoriginal ai slop!" is just. No. Geez some demos aren't that expensive...
Actually it's a further head scratcher bc their social media pages do NOT have these sorts of numbers to be running a successful kickstarter anyway??? Wtf
Oh never mind I did some snooping and they have like 8k followers on LinkedIn. I think that's how they're getting their projects funded over 600% every time. Man fuck that shit I hate this guy.
Eww, I'm gunna to throw up.
No, it's okay to be pissed off by AI "art."
And public domain art! I used that for my Capers adventure.
Also, if you are going to fund a kickstarter, you should include in the goals the money for the art, whether commissioned or stock art. You don't need to buy the whole thing before you even launch, so wtf
I was about to say exactly this, what the hell are they on
YEAH
Nah that sucks and I hope their project fails.
I wish it would too but it caught my attention because it is over funded :c
Ugh of course 😭
using AI for a DnD project is beyond the pale. an activity that at its core is about creativity and imagination offloading creativity and artistic expression to a bunch of bolts.....
I’ve started scouring Kickstarters and Roll20 listings to make sure the things I’m getting aren’t made with generative nonsense. It’s an infestation!
Does my nut in. I'm a one person show, like a lot of ttrpg makers, and I learned an entirely different art style just so I could do 'Number Station'. Will the project be successful when it launches? Probably not, but *I* put the damn effort in without theft. Smol bean is not an excuse.
It’s genuinely wild. “Oh nobody will take us seriously without custom art.” Well, A) nobody will take you seriously with AI images, and B) have they ever heard of Apocalypse World? They literally use stock art for the cover and it’s become one of the most influential systems in the scene.
Fan of the indie scene. I'll happily take amateur sketch art with flaws and soul over polished nothing. I may very well do just that when I'm ready to publish my own games.
That's straight up an insult to artists and all the creative people who found a way to bloom through DnD
It is! And it pisses me off!
This is so fucked up. Not even a like “hey this tier will fund artists” because yeah whatever you’re a small little guy…… okay…. You have 200 backers now…. You aren’t a small little guy anymore just pay artists.
LITERALLY. looking at their other stuff too they are overcharging for someone using gen ai for all the heavy lifting.
So it’s just people who don’t give a fuck about the craft and wanna make a quick buck got it JAJAJA NO ONE IS SHOCKED!
Just an observation but in TTRPG circles I’ve seen so much use of AI as if it’s not a spit in the face to all creatives in this space. I hate it here 😢
While I can't really help with ALL spaces, I can at least pass you my list so you can keep your BlueSky Feed clear of AI in the TTRPG space.
You're doing amazing work 🙏 thank you!!
No problem!
I guess I'm just lucky in who I follow/interact with, that I see little to no AI. When I do it is usually because of someone wanting to follow me.
I first noticed it when looking for modules on Foundry VTT for my own games, using both LLMs and image generators, as well as certain ttrpg subreddits. I avoid them at all costs but it is frustrating having to double check a cool thing only to realize it’s using The Plagiarism Machine(tm)
It feels like you're getting cheated. You see something that looks cool on a glance, then you realize the art actually looks like trash up close, and the creator didn't actually do any of the work. So it suddenly goes from a labor of love, to...a cash grab.
I don't use VTT but it always makes me sad when I go to DriveThru for my stuff and there's so much crap AI art on the front page.
I'm reminded of one Kickstarter/Backerkit where the dude goes on a 2 or 3 paragraph rant about how he uses gen AI images and blablabla its the text that matters anyway and blabla gatekeeping and in that moment I despised the lack of a block function with that campaign stuck on my homepage for weeks.
I WANT TO EXPLODE THAT PERSON WITH MY MIND.
Anyway like some well regarded TTRPGs are made entirely with stock art. Of note is Ironsworn and Chasing Adventure. Its not hard.
Why even do a Kickstarter then? Like, where’s the money going? And why not just add like 30% to the goal to cover custom art done by humans? This whole thing is ass backwards and those people apparently don’t understand how crowdfunding works (this is only slight hyperbole)
You're so right. All I could think of was "where is this money going towards? You don't need it because you're not spending it on hiring creatives or anything."
So essentially the money is going towards someone who’s gonna use AI to “make” something. Coolio. Tell ya what, crowdfunders: instead of giving your money to an AI bro, commission and actual human artist and get something of much higher quality (and not to mention custom!! yes, even tiddies!!!)
FOR REAL they should be crowdfunding ME to draw werewolf under boob.
WILD comment to see out of context scrolling through my fyp but I don't think I need any context you are simply correct!!!
CACKLES IM SO SORRY HAHAHAA
I feel like there’s a pun there… wouldn’t that be “packfunding” then? (it’s a wolf joke)
HAHAHAHAHH
