This last was the thing that caused the pause in the war. Lansing protested the northern occupation in the most extreme terms, pointing out that Wisconsin had “nothing to do with Toledo.” The Governor of Michigan stated “Toledo is an A and B thing, so C your way out of it!”
Madison replied that the occupation was justified since Lansing took Toledo. “Read history”, said the Wisconsin Governor. “You got statehood as a direct result of trading the UP in exchange for giving up Toledo. Since you took Toledo, you forfeited the UP. We took back what was ours plus interest.”
With West Virginia streaming out of the District, Maryland called up its militia and moved into DC. Annapolis released a statement that “since Charleston is occupying the Capital, we have to balance it out as a Northern State.” The President immediately posted “no thanks” to social media.
