The prominent row of cartes-de-visite in the picture includes portraits of well-known painters of the era like John Everett Millais, Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Rosa Bonheur—evidence that artists were circulating images of themselves long before Instagram
Another indication of the theoretical intent of Goodman's picture is that it gives central place to an image of critic John Ruskin, who was deeply engaged with photography's impact on art making
Entertaining reading James's ITALIAN HOURS and finding him talking smack about Ruskin every five pages for a while.
That magnifying glass is a *flex*.
