The issue, esp. when discussing the origins of SARS-CoV2, is Westerners’ misunderstanding of the term, leading to the vilification of wet markets, which are part of daily life in E and SE Asia.
Similar problem with “bushmeat”. Westerners don’t call it bushmeat when they hunt 🦌. But it’s the same. To me, both seem like racist microaggressions / colonial language, even if inadvertent. But I’m hardly the only one who holds this view. Lots of good articles written about this issue.
