Waving a (national) flag is odd even in a sporting content surely. Wearing it as a cape is ok if its of your country of origin but not yr country of residence

All too often. You should not trust anybody who waves a German flag on the occasion. Far more of a tell (and far less common) than various blackredgold accessories. It's a major country thing, not a British thing.
