the idea that twitter is a place for effective activism is frustrating because if your activism goes against the goals of one of the most evil men alive today he will go out of his way to silence you & render it ineffective, ie the word “cis” gets auto censored & i’m sure queers’ reach is penalized

Though it's not as if Bluesky is unproblematic. This from over of the UK's most distinguished journalists with a long record of for reporting on Israel's repression of Palestine bsky.app/profile/jona...

the followup makes it seem as though he has no evidence Bluesky is throttling him, though. since he's only following 13 people, maybe is that it's harder to grow followers here if you're not famous and don't engage with people?

Jonathan Cook: It's not rocket science. I've been unable to grow my followers here. I am currently on less than 4K followers. On FB, I have 55K. On X, 160K. Either I'm being shadowbanned (the old Twitter crew running this place were experts at that) or the Bluesky audience isn't keen on my kind of journalism.

Bluesky does have a history of banning Palestinian accounts. But it’s also the case I think that the political culture of Bluesky is such that there’s rather less interest in, and life-pervading revulsion of, the genocide than there is amongst at least left-wing Twitter. So that may also explain.

I have certainly found the genocide to be very prominent in Bluesky's political culture, but I left Twitter in June '23 so I can't do a direct comparison

I’m still on Twitter. One list I have is of Palestinian and Lebanese and Iranian accounts, which has been my main source of information as to what’s happening; I just couldn’t duplicate that on here.

Similarly, a list of leftist Ukrainian accounts and either they’re not on here at all or they don’t bother posting much. Again that’s a really valuable source of information that you just don’t get on here or in the media.

It would be lovely to have a site that provides that stuff without ones being exposed to the racist right-wing sewer stuff, which is indeed life-sapping, but I don’t think there is as yet.

yeah this site is still very focused on a pretty limited number of countries, and there's other things that limit its reach as far as activism I do suspect that Demsas's view of how to use Twitter is focused on the same countries
