I don't understand Russian reluctance to have a NATO member next door. Why would a peace loving nation not wish to have a peace keeping nation as a close neighbour?

Especially when Russia ALREADY has 3 NATO members next door: Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. So this argument of trump's (and Putin's) is a lie.
