I’m interested to see a) if anyone takes them to the woodshed on a colossal waste of money (ignoring for a moment the cost to civilization) and b) what the lame-assed excused for this boondoggle will be.

It won't cost them until he is gone and sanity is restored / if ever. But if sanity is restored, there will be a major move to punish those who were complicit.
