My question is, why. I am farmer friendly. So is it the feed, etc that is the trouble, or is it the grocery conglomerate?

Usually it isn't the farmers. But Canadian farmers have reduced herd sizes which drives up prices.

They’ve also pushed out most of the small abattoirs/butchers which means even if the farmers want to sell direct it’s very, very hard to get it processed. Corporate greed touches everything these days.

Biggest part is greed, but supply and demand as herd sizes decrease due to climate change. Pasture loses, feed shortages, etc. but ranchers aren’t the ones pocketing the profit. Here’s the hierarchy from lowest profit to most: rancher, feedlot, buyer, retailer. They all get a piece of the pie. ½

The interesting thing is a lot of those ranchers are people who vote for conservative climate change deniers parties, who make life even harder for them. So little sympathy is warranted. But a big concern over food security and affordability is warranted. 2/2
