Ireland voted 51 years ago... May 10th, 1972 Ireland and United Kingdom joined the EC* together in 1973. Just adding that for historical purposes.
As did Denmark.
Thank you...l did not know that. Ireland 🇮🇪 Denmark 🇩🇰 UK 🇬🇧 All joined 1st Jan, 1973
Bizarrely, I remember it because of A Question of Sport. There was once a question in which the answer was a football match between a team of the six original members and a team of the three new joiners. It was so quirky that it stuck!
It was also Tory policy and the Labour Party were mostly opposed.
De Gaulle is rejoicing from beyond the grave he was proved correct in 2016 (albeit in E & W only)
It must be remembered that 50 years ago we were voting on the Common Market. Europe ballooned into a vastly different beast in the following years. I’m pretty sure we would have voted to stay in a modern Common Market without many of the ‘extras’.

That great quote from “The Sun”(!) superimposed on the commemorative EEC 50p was true in 1973, 1975, certainly 2016, and of course still now: “When the world says Britain hasn't a snowball in hell's chance of going it alone, is that the time to say NO?” #RejoinSingleMarket #RejoinOurEU #RejoinEU
I don't think the UK would get member states to vote for our inclusion. Far to many xenophobic people spoiling it. We'd win a referendum on the subject, but joining would always be a hurdle we couldn't jump. Giving up the pound and open borders would get in the way. I have a dream we join again 🙏
Are the owners Europhobic, or are they acting primarily in their own self-interest, and everyone else should just follow suit? And so they bend the rules and lie until it suits their own interests, regardless of the price for others?
Those are not mutually exclusive options
Absolutely correct. On the other side i doubted it is often "just europhIc" and often greed is a main part in actions taken. I didn't want to limit the reasons, but expand them.
The Sun was (as now) owned by Rupert Murdoch in 1975
So where is your beloved #Labour Party on #Leveson2 BBC and GBN Propaganda??? Nowhere to be seen!
