I find the principle of deporting veterans a bit odd. Correct me if I am wrong, but, if you join the US military, you would have to swear an oath of allegiance to the US. The same applies to citizenship, does it not? So, shouldn’t they be of equal status?

No the citizenship oath is slightly different. In that oath they have to renounce allegiance to their previous country, that part is not in the military oath because we do allow non-citizens to join, but they can’t get a security clearance so jobs choices can really suck!

Military service expedites the process towards citizenship, but it's not handed to you. I still had to apply and then take the oral exam and do the interview. I had to gather paperwork, etc. I got it in about 6 months.
