The city I’m from, Anchorage Alaska has some of the highest sexual crime rates in the country. Where I live now has more petty crime (if you don’t lock your shit up) but a fraction of the violent crime. And 15x the population.

Yes, mid-sized and small cities in Republican run states have higher crimes rates. Large cities in Republican run states have crime rates higher than cities in Democrat run states, but are still on the decline. Studies have shown fear of crime is overblown regardless.

This is the problem. Most people's experience with crime is the news. You know stats because you have focused on it. That creates and illusion of constant danger of violence that isn't real.

None of the crime I knew about word of mouth made the news. Local media drives coverage, large media markets have a lot of money to report on all kinds of things that local/smaller media markets don’t have. Such is the case in Alaska.

I don't know how to explain this except with facts. Crime is down overall, in just abt every city in the nation, but down less in R run states. Crime is only up in rural, exurban areas. Maybe Anchorage is more like a small town, given the pop/ isolation. It does not change things for everywhere else

I’m not disagreeing. I also know stats. I do stats for a living. Not crime stats but I’m aware of them — hence my mention of them.

The context of your replies is that people are wrong about crime going down bc of your personal experience, and that it's fine for people to have an outsized fear of "crime," which is currently being used to enact a fascist gov't takeover of cities in the US. It is going down, and it is not okay.

Crime stats in Alaska are very high and the media does not cover it. That was my point, whatever yours may be.

I provided a simple anecdote. Then followed up with more. I never denied stats. This isn’t my own grad level stats on survey design, or my job where I crank out stats so I’d rather not interact with someone on the internet who insists I phrase everything perfectly to suit them? It’s a trend!

Victims of crimes are outliers. That has always been true. Being among certain populations can make it more likely, but it is overall a population outlier. And current public safety systems are not equiped to address crime or harm. Nothing this admin is doing will help anything.

Yes, Alaska Native women are assaulted at much higher rates. But I think a few studies found 1 in 3 of all Alaska women had been assaulted in some way.
