How are we this far into the 21st century and no one has made or even seriously attempted an Elric movie or series? Madness.

My theory is the pitch meeting started with “so his name is Eric right?”
I've been waiting for someone to try and do Pern justice. By now, the FX wouldn't be hard at all.
From your lips to the gods ears.
Oh yeah! Even an animated one.
And a studio could basically print money with it. I mean, even once they're out of Elric content, they could adapt Corum, Ereköse, Hawkmoon, and the Von Bek cycle, all culminating in a Tanelorn movie.
IMHO Amber is the lowest hanging fruit in the classic F/SF catalogue. Epic fantasy combined with a spectacularly dysfunctional family, perfect for TV.
I dunno, could be a bit Random.
Have you seen this marvelous piece by @deliverypig.bsky.social, based on the concept art by @gorangligovic.bsky.social? youtu.be/yGkWohEMcJQ?...
Yeah this fan animation is what I’d want! Whatever the studios these days would do would be less colorful and creative than the comics. They’d use boring modern music instead of Hawkwind. Elric is 20th century counterculture and HBO or whoever would water it down. Prob cast some buff guy. Basic shit
Well Hawkwind do some good Elric music, but about half is pretty corny, TBH. And not all modern rock sucks. Mastodon could do some FUCKING EPIC Elric stuff...
Oh but to my broader point: do you think they’ll pay for music or do you think it will be some synth composition made by AI or that standard soundtrack sound
Hmmm... Depends on if they want to sell the soundtrack I guess.
Mastodon could. But I think you’re confusing corny with campy.
No, I see you. I'm not sure we want campy OR corny for an Elric serial though. 😁😁 My Dying Bride? Devin Townsend? Opeth maybe?
Opeth yes. But consider that Hawkwind is the band that Moorcock was literally in has been soundtracking his work since before you or I were born. And however many songs they have that you might not like, they have that many more that are heavy (which I assume is your genre preference) to pick from.
(Not before I was born 😜😜😉) I have Chronicles Of The Black Sword...on vinyl when it came out. I wasn't QUITE old enough to see Lemmy with Hawkwind, but not far off. I'm pretty eclectic for a guy my age.
That’s supper cool. I got into Hawkwind based on a 1 minute clip about them in a Motörhead documentary that was extemely dismissive of Hawkwind. My thoughts were “so directorial voice, I see you don’t like Hawkwind but this very much seems for me”
You were born in 1970?
Wha? Why does it say 70?! I wish! Add ten years 😂🤣 How dafuq do I change that?
I also don’t think avoiding camp *entirely* is either possible or desirable
Hmm... I never really got camp from the novels, except maybe the way the movie Heavy Metal, or Krull, or Conan The Barbarian are. Is that the vibe you mean? Sort of ominously a little bit non-hetero in a good way.
I mean, camp is defined in the most expansive sense by ironic amusement at something with exaggerated artifice, and that rather describes the entire Melnibonéan civilization. Elric as this effete, jaded sorcerer swanning about in golden dragon armor is pretty camp…
Not to mention, all the Eternal Champions books are pretty blase about sexuality regardless, which is pretty camp.
But the pulps in general with exaggerated heroes and villains, and constructed archaisms can’t help but be camp
Yeah camp is pretty baked in going back to the pulps
I hang out on some of the Moorcock pages on Facebook, and whenever renderings of Elric are posted there you have no idea how regularly it looks like the über-muscular Conan sort of stuff.
o h n o
But, but, but, emaciated scrawny elfling with hidieously powerful magic sword...
They just don’t get it.
i'm in a private fan discord full of young queer elric fans and they do not suffer fools. Some great fan artists among them too :)
Ask Moorcock. He's still alive.
Do you know what I would give for an adaptation of The fortress of the Pearl?
Remember what happened to John Carter?
Yeah they made a good movie!
And lost $150 million 😥 that's why they won't do Elric
Trust me when I say this: everyone currently making movies still have enormous flops ahead of them. No reason not to make one of them Elric.
Last I heard executives told Moorcock it was too similar to the Witcher and Game of Thrones. BBC was developing a runestaff show in 2019, but it seems that might have fallen through since nothing has been heard of it since...
That's irony X 100, since it's literally the other way around Besides, how is the Emperor of Melnibone with a soul eating sword fighting reality-changing wizards and gods of chaos ANYTHING like Witcher or GoT? I mean, there's swords I guess. And a few dragons. But the scale of Elric is off the
chart. It's more like Stargate's last few series but the gods ACTUALLY ARE gods. And it's not galaxies, but literally other universal realities - multiple planes, no less.
Oh man, where to start? Elric’s been optioned more than once, but nothing’s ever come of it. He’s iconic within our circles but still niche beyond them and with so many newer properties borrowing his vibe, some fear the chance of it looking derivative. Basically, he’s shown up late to his own party.
Yep. See: The Witcher.
...and since nothing ever came of the Apple TV/Skydance Eternal Champion series (it seems to be dead in development hell), it isn't likely that the show will get as far as adapting any of the facets of the Eternal Champion, let alone Elric.
This for me always should've been the music score for such a thing. Yeah I know, there's Hawkwind, BÖC, et al., and it's kind of subjective from having first read the Elric books and heard this album around the same time back in mid-80s, but this for me always *was Melniboné. youtu.be/PSYMxC3agK4
Considering all the remakes and revivals and rehashes these days... yeah.
Get Pauly Shore as the voice of Stormbringer and the guy who played Steve Urkel as Elric.
I hate you.
That baffles me too, and also the Memory Sorrow and Thorn series! It’s like Hollywood thinks JRRT and GRRM are the only two people to ever write fantasy
Ooh I love this
I still have this hardcover somewhere, but the binding's been damaged due to me carting it around during my school years.
That series got me into fantasy as a kid. I'd watch it almost no matter how bad it was.
😱Good Point
