Yes, people often get that saying wrong, too. Disagree on the idea that nobody grows stuff from seeds anymore. In my rural area, it is common practice. My neighbor is a seed-starting magician.

Sorry, hyperbole. But it is a sign that the analogy behind the sayings is breaking down, because people don’t understand what it’s an analogy to, they’re just using it. Sowing seeds is no longer a common shared experience for a solid chunk of English speakers. Language is always changing…

I grew zinnias from seed last year and this year. Just started a second crop. Also have okra plants that I grew from seed.

I had great luck with starting in little pots, but once I planted any seedlings, pill bugs decimated the plants. I lost every single carrot I direct sowed (so…every carrot). I barely kept the marigolds I started from seed alive. They are still very stunted.

Unless it’s quilts and you’re leaving them to your kids. 😉
