I agree with your point, but the farther back you look, the more opening shots you will see from Republicans. I think Nixon represented a big turning point for conservatives. He tried to do a lot of what Trump is doing now and Republicans have been mad that Nixon had to resign for 50 years.

Totally. Roberts body of work has essentially been white washing Nixon era abuses and re-framing them as essentially legal at the time.

The business plot was the opening shot. They showed their treasonous cards then and should have been hung.

Breaking the back of the slaveholders after the civil war should have happened, and we've been paying ever since. This time, we need to finish them off.

Then there was the Business Plot... which had the elder Bush (Prescott, I think it was) as one of the ringleaders... Hurrah for General Smedley Butler.

He shouldn't have been pardoned. Sorry Republicans are mad about a corrupt president having to step down. Matter of fact, when Congressional Republicans had ethics, they were the ones to tell Nixon he'd lost confidence with them. Now we have spineless worms for Congressional Republicans.

There's a good reason he was the number 3 person at the doj under Nixon, it's the groundwork to overturn antitrust that happened under Reagan. He was hired to make that happen, and he did.

Republicans still angry about losing the civil war (yes I know they weren’t republicans then but you know what I mean) and the double whammy of the civil rights act tearing down segregation

Oh you can go even further back to Hoover and '32. The anti-New Deal underground faction in the GOP was quite whacky. Then after 1960 and Nixon you get this extra level of "ressentiment as politics" that then harnessed the HUGE number of eager and dumb young Boomers making ratfucking common practice

Yeah, or to the Confederacy, the lost cause, and the end of Reconstruction, or the people who insisted on the 3/5ths compromise, etc. There's been a strong radical reactionary streak among conservatives since time immemorial.

You can’t go lower than prolonging Vietnam war to win the election in 1968 by backstabbing Johnson in the peace talks, and then murder millions because the North Vietnamese expected him to honor his side of the bargain.

Nixon was proud of having appointed four Justices. Then three of them voted against him over the tapes. The vote was 8-0. The reason Rehnquist recused himself is that he was working in the Department of Justice at the time of some of the allegations. Integrity that he later did not have.

The two segregationist southerners, Haynsworth and Carswell, he tried to put on the Supreme Court and the senate rejected in ‘69 and ‘70 are a good example.
