I sound insane when I say this but I truly believe a big part of the Trump admin’s approach to energy policy is driven by gender anxiety. They think coal and oil are manly and renewables are effeminate.

John Mashey @johnmashey.bsky.social

1/ Petroleum industry is far more techie. When I worked at USBM in late 1960s, *we* did the research for the coal industry: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_... Much coal (as in WY, currently ~40% of US) is at near/surface, although mines can get a few 1000 feet deep. www.eia.gov/energyexplai...

aug 24, 2025, 10:43 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
John Mashey @johnmashey.bsky.social

2/ That is nontrivial engineering, but basics remain: dig up coal, stick it in railroad cars and ship it elsewhere to be burned in power plants. Petroleum exploration, drilling, reservoir modeling, chemistry and mechanical engineering are way more complex, and for decades have used much computing.

aug 24, 2025, 10:43 pm • 1 0 • view

3/ * First they have to find petroleum deposits, which uses seismic sensors &analysis. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reflect... * = topics discussed with petroleum companies I visited.

4/ They have to drill, sometimes as deep as 40K feet: www.bop-products.com/blog/drillin... That’s serious engineering, which got even tougher with horizontal drilling: www.dmr.nd.gov/ndgs/documen...

aug 24, 2025, 10:43 pm • 1 0 • view

John Mashey @johnmashey.bsky.social

5/ *Then they do reservoir modeling: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reservo... *in 1990s, SGI offered parallel 64-bit microprocessor-based systems that were very cost-effective in such applications.

aug 24, 2025, 10:43 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
John Mashey @johnmashey.bsky.social

6/ *Then of course, besides the drilling gear, there’s lots of me mechanical engineering for pipes, offshore platforms, refineries. And finally, there’s serious chemistry. When I visited petroleum companies in 1990s, I was usually talking to serious engineers & geophysicists.

Electrics and hybrids are fascinating to a car nerd like me. I hope my next car is fully electric. I will respect Tesla for proving EVs could become mainstream, but I think Elon is now a net drag on Tesla's reputation and competitiveness.

Trump issued a stop work order on a huge offshore wind project in NYC, Empire 1 set to launch in 2026. Hochul got the stop work lifted a month later in exchange for allowing a natural gas pipeline project to go forward. The pipeline company gave $500m to GOP in 2024. IT'S THE M-O-N-E-Y.
