They're doing the same with Kseniia Petrova, but slow-rolling it. I assume they're less eager to publicize a case they cannot connect to Latino gangs. But they have doubled down on absolutely absurd smuggling charges. She failed to declare a scientific sample. That carries a small fine, not jail.

Without proof, and without much plausibility, Ábrego has been alleged by the Trump administration to be the author of various crimes and malfeasances. They admit that deporting him was a mistake, but also want us to believe that he is the sort of person who should be deported – a human trafficker, in one fantasy; a gang leader, in another. That there is no proof for these allegations is beside the point: the point is that the Trump administration is claiming authority over reality itself, claiming the ability to decide what is true and what is false, and to reclassify every migrant – and in particular every Latino male – as a criminally dangerous threat that must be eliminated. Ábrego, then, must be guilty because the Trump administration arrested him, and because they can do no wrong. He must be guilty because he is a migrant, and innocence and immigration are mutually exclusive. He must be guilty, too, because his case made them do something that they did not want to do: admit a mistake, face public pressure, reverse an action, and – worst of all – show weakness. And he must be guilty because he has become a symbol of all the immigrants they plan to deport, all the Americans whose rights they plan to trample on, all the past and future victims of their program.

For the Trump administration, it's the perfect test case: they would like to assert their power to deport anyone they choose. They've also invested too much effort to back down, and if anyone remembers this post, they've been pwned (he did come back) and they are really pissed off about it.

"Claiming authority over reality itself" is reminiscent of M. Gessen's comparison of Trump to Putin.

I wonder how much of this is nothing more than racial "cleansing" I believe the white right wing deeply fears becoming a minority in their "own country"

This. Living in Texas for most of my life I always knew the politics of the majority were distasteful but they really went completely off the rails once Hispanics/Latino/etc. started to approach parity numberwise. I thought fleeing to Austin would help and it did, for a few years, but nah.

It's what you have to do with a lie. Repeat it as much as possible. His allegedly incriminating knuckle tattoos consider of a marijuana leaf, an X-eye smiley (Nirvana fan?), a cross, and skull. These aren't gang tattoos, but are scary if you find his brown skin scary.

You won't hear this anywhere else but in The Guardian: 'Ábrego addressed a crowd of well-wishers in Spanish. “Regardless of what happens here today in my Ice check-in,” he said, “Promise me this: that you will keep fighting, praying, believing in dignity and freedom. Not only for me; for everyone.”

"They have set about punishing Ábrego for his role as proof of their own malignant idiocy." Sums it up truthfully.
