Can we please remember, that, biologically --- **diversity** is how eco-systems survive and adapt. Mono-cultures, when threatened, pretty much by anything, die. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, in the long, long, long biological history of earth -- that says mono-cultures offer an advantage.

This is true, but remember the target audience doesn't understand ecosystems or monocultures. We need to use the words and avoid trying to "explain it" to them. While I appreciate the idea of knowledgeable people mentoring society, these individuals tend to resent it.

He was a slaveholder, this is true. The fact does not negate his observation. Or observations... Also said "a standing army is a mortal threat to democracy". Allowing slavery to exist in the Union was seen as an essential compromise to its formation. It is also, arguably, its Original Sin.
