I admittedly haven't had the chance to play either Draw Steel or Shadowdark yet, but I find Shadowdark's approach where you roll on a leveling table to get whatever benefit the never level confers to be a neat solution.

I totally understand that "build a bespoke character" is a completely different design aim from "put players under LOTS of constraints, and see how they deal with it", but the randomization to disrupt my occasional analysis paralysis/decision fatigue is really appealing.
