Hand-wringing about "overpopulation" almost always has a backdrop of racism. Because those places where population is growing fastest are in and around Africa, calls to curb growth seem inevitably directed towards the globally disadvantaged.

Nor is this new. It is no accident that 1970s era Erlich-inspired anti population growth morphed into the racist anti-immigration movements that gave us MAGA's America First restrictionism. Erlich was, in fact, on the board of Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) until 2003.

This organization routinely praises America's dictator for his "bold action to secure our borders" from black and brown people. Overpopulation alarmists are inextricably linked to racist priorities. Ironically, so too are many depopulation alarmists (e.g. Musk).
