We have a large, well-established Rose of Sharon bush in our from garden. A few years back it somehow seeded itself in the backyard in a tight space next to the deck. It’s now over six feet tall!

I have this problem recently. self-seeding into cracks. For years, this didn't happen. the tall one was looking worn so I bought a new one, planted it, and maybe it is the instigator. I have about 3-4 in terrible spots. They look pretty, but they're in cracks!

In all seriousness though, my theory is that the bricks/pavers/whatever act as a sort of mulch, keeping the soil below moist and pest-free. If the seed finds a way to germinate in a crack, it’s probably going to thrive
