I saw someone else go thru the statistics. The 2% is only if you use the entire population of the US, including the free states. If you take out the free states it’s 3+%, if you just count the “ Deep South” it’s more that 6%.

To me, that says in 1860's Deep South 6% of the white population was living at a higher level of living than 96% (or so) of the white population today.
