This is not always true. One of the most famous cults of the modern era, Scientology, really didn't suffer from Hubbard's lack (at least in terms of influence and membership).

Scientology is also a financial pyramid scheme. Those are much harder to kill.

It in the same way. Most cults drain bank accounts up front and use members as free labor but still pay for their basic needs. Scientology just keeps making people pay ALOT of money while they work average Jobs. The cult doesn't have to feed/house them so all the money flows into leadership.
