It means there is a connection but it’s in the opposite direction: as one goes up, the other goes down. Of course, there’s no evidence for that at the low doses we’re talking about.

Direct and inverse are indeed contradictory though, if that’s what you meant. I think he’s using direct in a non-standard way to mean high correlation instead of ‘not inverse’.
