Semi official means that the aircrew of an aircraft type developed a common name themselves for the type which became synonymous enough to start appearing in official documentation.

I googled “Naval Aircraft Factory N3N” and on the first two pages of hits. The “Semi-official” names in order of frequency. Yellow Peril. 12 times N3N only. 4 times Yellow Bird. 1 time Canary. 1 time So I must concede my error and agree that Canary was obviously the Common Name 🙄
