Honestly, why on earth does the mainstream media pay so much attention to what the LNP says? They are a marginal rump. They do not represent any substantial body of opinion. It is a part of reactionaries, fascists, racists and god-bothering fundamentalists.

I suspect it’s because journalists are so lazy and devoid of imagination or intellect that they like to pretend there are only two views on everything - red team vs blue team. So they legitimise fringe nut-jobs because they supposedly represent the ‘other side’. What a disgrace the media has become
because "they said they said" is "balanced" ...also easy and quick which is paramount in these days of content hungry platforms "serviced" by 5000 fewer aussie journos than a decade ago. it's where "balance is a unicorn" meets "the accountants have cut our budget again"

I would ask why does any obvious mis-information from anyone get attention? Provide balance and coverage by having all the legitimate information up front, and the spin and dubious info separate so people can judge if they want to read/view crap. But scrap the real rubbish as you mention.
I think some producers, managers and editors also like stirring up controversy. And they are too shallow or too egotistical to recognise the damage they do.
