Would the US States be happy to be in Commonwealth? Who would be Head of State? Presumably not the King of a foreign country as is currently the case in Canada

That's part of being part of Canada. That said, a temporary union or furthering the idea of "a nation within a national" aka what Quebec is at this point, could do the trick. Look, it wouldn't be perfect but I'm pretty sure something will be sorted out rapidly if it was asked for and voted on.

Owl, most Americans are going to work every day and keeping our heads down. But we’re not gathering for dinner with friends, we are saving as much money as we can, making sure our passports are updated. Making sure our kids have cash in case they need to escape.
