That’s the thing. This regime only knows/cares about the “look”/spectacle of authoritarianism. Previous totalitarianism certainly had a look and the look mattered—but it wasn’t all there was.

Sure enough. Many many victims. And more goons on the way. But I feel as if “dying guys into the appearance of strength” accounts for WAY more than it should be able to.
