That seems counter intuitive IF the point of the game is to have the highest score tally. Hmmm.

The thinking is that an offense will be a little more conservative down 3. They know they only need a FG so once they get in range they'll be more safe to ensure they can kick the FG. But down 6 the offense has to go all out for a TD.

Sure, if they want to play it safe. I say, take off the pads and helmets and play in the mud with leather caps! But that play would make sense in that situation.
