Democrats ran a “for every vote we lose in the city we gain two in the suburbs” campaign just like they did in 2016, and it was a flop. They assumed fear of Trump was enough to get people out to vote and forgot that most voters have very short memories.

Remember how Biden ran on giving people $2000 and then was like “well you already got $600 from Trump!” - yeah, that kind of thing stuck with working class voters across the board, not leftists, who felt abandoned by the Democrats.
That was the moment the elation from the election win really got shaken off. I remember thinking “ooooh this is gonna be one of THOSE administrations isn’t it?”
I won’t even deny that Biden did a lot of good things, but these are the kinds of things that stick with voters more than anything else. It was awful optics from day one.
