FISH-FORM SPICE CONTAINER (BESAMIN) Silver, foil backed glass Austrian (Viena), 1813 FISH-FORM SPICE CONTAINER (BESAMIN) Silver, foil backed glass Austrian (Viena), 1813 In the Jewish faith, at the conclusion of the Sabbath and most holidays, there is a special ceremony called Havdalah. The short service includes special blessings, a candle, a cup of wine and a spice container known in Hebrew as a Besamim. This distinctive spice container is in the shape of a three-dimensional fish, whose hinged head lifts to reveal the Ten Commandments designated by Hebrew letters and an opening to insert the spices, often cinnamon or cloves. the best exhibit we saw was casa susanna; go if you can (and the book is on sale on amazon if you can’t) www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/...

In 2004 two antique dealers discovered an intriguing trove of snapshots at a Manhattan flea market. The photographs-some candid, others playfully posed-were created by and for a community of cross-dressers who met regularly in New York City and the Catskill Mountains throughout the 1960s. Casa Susanna brings together those photographs and others, along with related publications that shed light on a significant moment in the history of trans identity in the United States. Two modest resorts run by Susanna Valenti and her wife, Marie Tornell, provided safe spaces for guests to freely cross-dress en femme during an era of strictly defined gender roles. People in this circle used the camera to create and affirm their femme identities, exchanging photographs at gatherings and sharing them by mail. The underground magazine Transvestia, founded to foster understanding and connection, published the pictures along with autobiographical essays by readers, makeup and clothing advice, fiction, and poetry. During this period, most cross-dressers lived in isolation and shame. This exhibition presents new research on the double lives many in this community led as married men with established careers. The photographs also reveal the type of woman they aimed to embody: a middle-class ideal of femininity that was both liberating and limiting. All photographers are unidentified unless otherwise noted. The exhibition is organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario and Les Rencontres d'Arles in collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibition is made possible by The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, Inc.
