As a physician 1 of my MANY concerns abt this facility is it harms detainees AND it potentially escalates mosquito borne illnesses! Due to climate & international travel, FL is a prime GROUND ZERO location for deadly mosquito borne illnesses to explode into epidemics AND endemicity. It’s STUPUDITY.

One thing to keep in mind is that building in the Everglades was a deliberate choice. The administration wanted a punitive, dangerous camp. The shoddy, temporary facilities (at far above permanent-facility per-bed costs) exacerbate the conditions. Mosquitoes apparently have free rein. [2/17]

Mosquitoes have likewise long had a starring role in concentration camps around the world, starting with the first reconcentrados in Cuba in the 1890s. Forcing families out of the countryside and behind barbed wire was *meant* to punish civilians by depriving them of food and shelter. [4/17]

With reconcentrados surrounded by standing water in overcrowded and unsanitary settings, mosquito-borne malaria became a leading cause of death. Encephalitis deaths were also common. More than 100,000 civilians died in squalid conditions in these camps, from hunger and disease. [5/17]

People also don’t realize the size of the geographic area in which malaria-carrying mosquitoes live: what gets established in Florida 1 year could end up in Maine the next.

I tried to look up death toll from malaria in 1930s USA, but couldn't find it. Must've been a pretty serious problem, tho, if Congress legislated and funded an entire department dedicated to eradicating it in America!

Thank you! Was surprised to see Arkansas so hard-hit! I didn't realize they were swampy (also very surprised to see S GA not high in mortality given the swampy south: may have been a population density thing, tho, as more farming in middle and north GA than in the Okefenokee.)

Some more anecdotes in Russian context: - Gulag prisoners would climb into tall trees to pee. They could protect any other piece of skin, but not that one. If they didn't, they would die from infections (malnutrition being a great accelerator for sure). #1/3

#2/3 - In a movie about a group escape from either Gulag or POW-camp (similar to 'The Long Walk Home', but not that one), they see locals walking mosquito-free, and very hesitantly approach them, to find out their secret. Solution: rubbing resin on skin. How to remove/clean: no priority I guess.

#3/3 - IIRC, the psyop method, for interrogation, was to bury the suspect, leaving only head free above ground. NB: if deprived of sleep long enough, you will also die.

Mosquitoes have been one of mankinds biggest killers. They carry/transmit many severe illnesses. Some are rare some are common. The idea that another pandemic could evolve from them is probably not too far fetched. The concentration camp is a disaster waiting to happen. Not just for those in it.

Murine typhus can be transmitted via fleas and although rare in Florida, there have been a couple reported cases. Fortunately, the rickettsial bacteria that cause Murine Typhus can be treated with antibiotics.

A year ago I’d have said very likely it would. But now…? 1)Medical attention to detainees/ prisoners continues to deteriorate under private-for-profit management Trump’s cruel regime. 2)Cuts to funding, programs & staff dedicated to public health has been drastically reduced & replaced by ideology.
