In some ways I think we were all better off when no-one affected to care about historical accuracy. I love hokum, but hokum with aspirations to integrity is insufferable.

Precisely. Prince of Thieves remains a delight, but that po-faced Robin Hood with Russell Crowe is awful.

Funnily enough, the film I had in mind re hokum was the Errol Flynn Robin Hood.
