We didn't have buses -- we got ourselves to school, and some kids had to come all the way crosstown, not walkable. They took city buses.
If you've got piano lessons and karate lessons and Mandarin tutoring and you're in the School Beautification Club, the school bus can't get you to your activities or take you home at any time other than when school ends.
Bus budgets have been cut you need to live over 2 miles to ride, dance lessons after school are tight to get to even w/ parent pickup. Friends pick up their kids due to behavior/porn on phones on the bus. No bus after detention, another possible schedule conflict /sibling activities.
The 2 mile rule was in effect when I was in school 20 years ago, those kids were just expected to walk home. School district ran a later bus for extracurriculars and sports but it was reduced service and would only drop kids off at a few points leaving most kids to walk a mile+ from the bus stop
A lot of bussing was severely cut in the last 10 years, and especially the last 5 as schools found they couldn't pay bus drivers enough to work the 4 hours and cuts to bussing had less opposition than extra curriculars.
We walk to our school Bus drivers are also in short supply in our district so most kids don’t get a bus
Not all districts have bus service. I’ve never been on a school bus except for field trip days.
