Just saw the new Superman movie—I think it's the best Superman movie yet. The parallels with politics today cannot be ignored. In fact, it was incredibly refreshing to see Hollywood lean into politics rather than whitewash it. Posting my full analysis soon. This is not a review I expected to write.

Agree 100% and I must say I love his super dog!💙 I got to thinking on the way home about Trump and his stooges having a pic made of him dressed up like Superman! Someone needs to correct that post! Trump’s true character would of course have been the evil Lex Luthor!😈

1/ As someone who grew up with post war Superman comics, I think the character has always been political while the times were different and to some extent, the comics were constrained, he did go after many of the same type of criminals we have today.

2/ The character seems to have been a surrogate for an immigrant struggling to find a place in a strange new world where freedom and justice were considered ideals even if they were not always attained.

3/ Lois Lane was a ambitious woman reporter who IMHO, foreshadowed the liberation movement that would follow decades later. Finally, and perhaps most relevant to the situation today, the Superman character was anti-authoritarian. He would have despised a character like Donald Trump.

I thought it was great! Superman is supposed to care about people. He's supposed to be heroic and punch bullies in the nose. The fact that there are parallels to comic book villains in some peoples' behaviour should probably give them pause. I didn't find the movie very political at all.

I had high hopes for this movie and just feel like Black Adam all over again. You can make Superman seem vulnerable without having him get his ass beat throughout the movie. He didn't look strong or act strong. And I'm not blaming the actor. I blame the writer/director solely.

Strength is not “can’t get hurt”. Strength is “not letting that hurt stop you from doing the right thing.” Clark is a muscular guy, sure. But his strongest muscle has always been his heart.

●Line Them Up At The Guillotines● @d4vi5-j.bsky.social

I spoke of vulnerability, not strength. In man of steel his vulnerability was shown by him walking into a congressional hearing and not seeing the wheelchair bomb, watching all those people incinerated and coming to the realization that maybe he needs to start looking and questioning. 👇🏼

Killing villains out of fear is neither vulnerability nor strength. Superman has both, Snyder’s character had neither.

●Line Them Up At The Guillotines● @d4vi5-j.bsky.social

Got it. You didn't understand Man of Steel. Or that scene. Vulnerability is getting your ass handed to you by everyone & shrugging it off, and bad guys can shoot people in the head and then cry when caught. The one character who shouldn't cry is Lex, especially after going on about why he hates him.

Can you please touch on the lack of a strong female role (doesn’t pass the Bechdel Test)? I’m somewhat frustrated that the “immigrant” is a stereotypical, macho white male. I agree that the movie was good. I just think it could have been much better. Why can’t people empathize with women and POC?

titubasrevenge.bsky.social @titubasrevenge.bsky.social

I just can’t let go of the disappointing way the female characters were written. The movie had a whole scene where Lois Lane was treated as a damsel in distress, putting her in a bubble while a man fights off 40 people. She’s supposed to be a badass investigative reporter and the neutered her.

Okay but damsel in distress would mean she would’t have autonomy in the situation and would only be used as a prop to motivate the male character. Going to the beach base was her idea. Lois is never used as a prop and is always proactive in stopping Lex.

Yeah cause she’s a normal civilian and he was about to fight an army of Lex’s goons. One stray bullet and she’s gone. Lois isn’t a fighter but that doesn’t make her weak. I hate the idea that a strong woman needs to be physically strong.

She didn’t even break the story. That was given to a man too. What scene was she strong in? If her strength is supposed mental, that wasn’t the case. She only convinced one of the three meta humans to help her. She wasn’t written as a strong female at all. Gunn should get help with writing women.

She did break the story. Jimmy got the leads, but Lois was the one who put it all together. She even dictated the final story to Jimmy WHILE PILOTING A SPACE SHIP.
